The
Dilemma of Pulling out Troops from Iraq
By AbuBakr G. Shaikh

The debate on the merits of the
war on Iraq will continue to drag on for decades,
mostly on a partisan basis .
During the past few months, the patience of the
public and the congressmen appears to be thinning
out in view of the mounting war casualties The
pains and the hardships of the bereaved families
are not difficult to imagine, especially in view
of the fact that an end to the insurgencies is
nowhere in sight.
Congressman Murtha ,a brave soldier and a true
patriot, could not remain without being touched
by the overwhelming heartaches and sufferings
of his constituents. Despite his sagacity and
clout, he could not contain his emotions when
he called for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq
without giving a second thought to the inconceivable
inferno it will cause in the entire world.
The pulling out of the collision troops from Iraq
- without completing the mission - will be widely
interpreted as the defeat of the United States
and a moral victory for the insurgents. It would
give an instant boost to their cause and a great
stimulus to the extremists’ designs. Inevitably,
it would also occasion great embarrassment for
Washington and considerable damage to US prestige
and standing as the world’s sole super power
Understandably, Iraq will burn out in an uncontainable
civil war, which will also draw neighboring countries
into it in view of their vested interests .
Such a development may well cause instability
in the entire Middle East ,including some vulnerable
countries in Central Asia and South East Asia
and Afghanistan .The insurgents could easily spread
out and manipulate conditions to their advantage.
It would be in the best i interests of Iraq that
the United States does not change course now.
This could be done only when Iraq is in a position
to defend itself and defeat the insurgents .
