U-turning
in ‘National Interests’

No one in the world has seemingly
taken so many U-turns as our President.
On June 17, 2005, General Pervez Musharraf said
he ordered a travel ban on the gang-rape victim
Mukhtaran Mai (in national interests) as her visit
would have tarnished the country’s image.
“I took the decision to stop her from going
to the US myself. I took this decision in the
best national interest of Pakistan because I truly
believed that the invitation would have tarnished
Pakistan’s international image.”
On June 29, 2005, the same Gernal Musharraf stated:
“Let me make it absolutely clear that Mukhtar
Mai is free to go wherever she pleases, meet whomever
she wants and say whatever she pleases.”
Again in the best national interests!
