Stay Away

One of the fundamental qualities
of man is that he deliberates on his actions.
If, for example, a person opens a business he
has an object in mind: “I intend to make
money”
Likewise, it is essential that we realize the
reason for fasting in the Mubarak month of Ramadan.
We fully understand that the object of fasting
is not just to stay away from food and drink for
one month. The object for which Allah Tala has
made fasting compulsory is that we acquire the
quality of “Taqwa,” i.e. to stay away
from sin.
It is compulsory for every Muslim to do some soul
searching and question himself: Have I achieved
my objective or not? When a person stays away
from sin it is a clear indication that he has
achieved his objective - he has gained the quality
of taqwa. It is rather sad and extremely disturbing
to observe that on the eve of Eid, which is a
very auspicious night, Muslims are seen openly
breaking the commands of Allah Tala. How sad that
this night is spent by Muslims in singing, dancing
etc. This is proof that we have not understood
the purpose of fasting.
May the words of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) be
food for thought for all of us: “Whoever
stays awake for ibadaadah [worship] on the following
five nights, entrance into jannat [paradise] becomes
wajibfor him, lailatul tarwiyah,[the night preceding
the eight of zilhaj], laylatul arafah, laylatun
nahr [the nights preceding the ninth and tenth
of zilhaj], the night preceding iydul fitr and
the night preceding the fifteeth of Shabaan”.
The night before Eid is the night of prize giving
when Allah Tala wants to reward us for fasting.
