A Friend Indeed

The catastrophic devastation
in Pakistan and Kashmir resulting from the October
8 earthquake has been a test for many of its citizens
and friends. One important friend, the United
States, under the leadership of
“Pakistan’s best friend”, George
W. Bush, has shown how friends help during times
of need.
The United States, especially under President
Bush, regards Pakistan as a close friend, especially
after Islamabad came forward and offered help
in the war against terrorism and extremism, immediately
after the 911 catastrophe. President Musharraf’s
leadership and his administration’s solid
and principled stand against the enemies of America
(and Pakistan), vividly testified how much Pakistan
values American friendship.
American helicopters and other equipment, along
with millions of dollars of aid, is what Pakistan
needs, and these are being actually delivered
in the post-earthquake period. In addition, the
MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), a 56-bed
mobile hospital with 50 doctors and nurses that
is capable of performing 20 operations a day and
providing emergency treatment, is on its way.
American ships, carrying heavy machinery and equipment
have already arrived. We Americans of Pakistani
descent should thank our President Bush, for his
prompt help at this critical hour.
We should also dedicate ourselves to work for
the betterment of those affected by the quake
while American aid continues to bring about the
much needed wholesome change in their life. At
the same time, we must also continue to provide
service and care for those affected by natural
disasters in the United States.
By demonstrating mutual concern and a deep sense
of care, we could help further strengthen the
bonds of friendship between Pakistan and the United
States. Remember that America , indeed, is Pakistan’s
friend in need.
