The Muslim
Response

As someone who
has published regularly in Pakistan Link on social
issues let me make a few observations.
Your editor made a very insightful observation
in his July 22, 2005 editorial note: “Science
and technology are the greatest equalizer –
a stimulant for economic equality and resultant
peace – between nation states and community
groups. Indisputably, they account for the disconcerting
divide between the haves and the have-nots. The
creative impulse needs to be nurtured and sustained
anew.”
As a nuclear physicist and an analyst I couldn’t
agree more.
India or even China now look up to America as
a great nation they can learn from, as Indians
or the Chinese believe in the vision of progress
through embracing science and technology –
with America, the undisputed science and technology
leader.
The ruling elite in Pakistan, by and large, has
begun to realize that the Pakistan society has
to be fundamentally changed. Unfortunately, this
elite is a small minority. Besides, from their
writings I am yet to be convinced that the Pakistani
elite knows how to bring progress to Pakistan.
There are no easy solutions. It will take several
decades, even if a sustained and smart effort
is made.
Pakistan needs a whole new vision.
