A Source of
Smog

A recent study citing dairy farms as San Joaquin
Valley’s biggest source of smog-producing
gases points to yet another reason why dairy production
is bad news for the environment, animals, and
our health.
California’s dairy farms, on which cows
live crammed in huge mud lots, produce 55 billion
pounds of manure a year — that’s 120
pounds of waste a day for each cow. Nitrates,
ammonia, and phosphorous from this waste are poisoning
waterways, killing fish, and contaminating drinking
water supplies. On top of that, dairy products
are linked to osteoporosis, obesity, and cancer
in humans.
If you don’t want to support an industry
that harms the environment, animals, and your
health, try dairy alternatives — from plain
and flavored soy and rice milks to soy “egg”
nog and vegan parmesan “cheese.” To
