Bush’s
Visit
By Dr. Maqsood Jafri

President Bush’s visit to the Indo-Pak subcontinent
was of great importance. It also had a latent
lesson for Americans: America should take the
lead and responsibility in resolving the festering
problem of Kashmir.
The sub-continent is like a volcano ready to erupt
at any time and consume a ravaged land. Both India
and Pakistan are nuclear powers, and a slight
mistake on either side could result in incalculable
disaster.
Further, America should not support monarchs and
military dictators but help promote democratic
forces in the world. If the American President
takes solid steps for the resolution of the Kashmir
dispute and for the promotion of democratic norms,
perhaps his second visit to India and Pakistan
will not lead to demonstrations.
