Sports and
Pakistan

What a dismal performance all round,
be it hockey, cricket, athletics and what’s
that they call, oh yes, football? Is it not a
matter of shame that a nation of 150 million cannot
win even a single medal in the international meets,
where much smaller nations than ours out-perform
us?
It has also become a fashion for the whiz kids
and high profile officials to lament and offer
flimsy untenable excuses after the humiliation,
instead of just admitting their incompetence and
resigning from the post honorably, vacating it
for some one who could do better.
Just see the ad on the TV showing Shoaib not adhering
to the ‘sleep regime’ imposed by the
coach and the coach helplessly shrugging off his
shoulders! That speaks volumes about the standard
of discipline of our teams and the standard of
the officials responsible to enforce it.
I was told by a friend that during the recently
concluded Hockey Championship not a single player
of any other country was seen late at night at
any of the night clubs or restaurants in Madrid
except that of the Pakistani team. And this is
not something new or not known to the joy riding
battalions of the officials accompanying the team.
It happens always and every time. Such officials
are not worth being retained. Just sack them all,
if any one is listening.
