Intolerance
in Europe

"Intolerance in Europe"
in the Washington Post presented a balanced view.
It is yet another reminder of why I and other
members of my community feel proud to be citizens
of the United States, where a major national newspaper
confronts this recent, dangerous rise of bigotry,
which cannot be good for any society.
The wave of bigotry only emboldens extremists
within Muslim communities in Europe and around
the world.
Those who wear the veil do so out of deep religious
conviction, just as devoted Christians wear the
cross as an article of faith. The decision to
hold on to religious symbols is something very
personal. Government officials should stay out
of people's personal lives.
In its very essence Islam teaches moderation.
Asserting their religion with moderation in newfound
homes -- i.e., the countries to which the immigrants
have immigrated -- eases the assimilation process.
Assimilation does not mean renunciation of one's
core beliefs or cultural values but enhances the
chances to succeed. And Islam encourages success
in all phases of life.
