Musharaff’s
War on People of Pakistan

When the legacy
of Musharraf’s tenure is written, the highlights
would be the unabated war on the people of Pakistan.
Extra-judicial killing of political opponents
in Balochistan, disappearance of journalist opposed
to the junta, repeated attacks on people of Baluchistan
and Wazirstan will be the low points of his dictatorship.
Besides these killings, the most appalling is
the forced disappearance of Pakistani nationals
with no recourse to the country’s legal
system.
On the one hand, Musharraf must be commended for
passing the Women Protect Act and doing so in
a democratic fashion. This is a great achievement
and it must be praised. If properly implemented,
it has the potential to transform Pakistan society.
At the same time, Pakistanis are being kidnapped
by the intelligence agencies, subjected to inhuman
treatment and incarceration stretching for months
and years. According to HRCP (Human Rights Commission
of Pakistan) 242 people are still missing. In
almost all cases, the relatives have alleged that
the victims were detained by the intelligence
agencies of Pakistan. Musharraf has transformed
the West’s war on terror to a relentless
war against the people of Pakistan and their values.
