Pulpit
Call: Stay away from Terror
By Dr. Mustafa Kamal Sherwani

On the last day of the Haj pilgrimage, around
2.5 million Muslims vowed to steer clear of fanaticism.
They were heeding the call of the Grand Mufti
of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdul-Aziz al-Sheikh,
who was delivering his sermon on the plains of
Arafat. The Mufti said: “Shariat does not
allow terrorism. Islam literally means peace.
Brothers, unite for one another’s sake and
follow true Islam.”
The massive pilgrims gathering emphatically responded
with a “yay” at the Nimrah Mosque.
The Grand Mufti deserves all praise from every
corner of the world. He simply reiterated the
well-established Islamic position. However, I
think, the huge gathering present at the Arafat,
especially the youth from Afghanistan and Iraq,
would have been more interested in knowing from
the revered Grand Mufti as to what options are
available to Muslims according to Qur’an
when terrorism, barbarity and savagery are thrust
upon them. This is something more important which
the community the world over is aspiring to know,
but unfortunately the Mufti has missed the opportunity
to enlighten them about this most bewildering
dilemma of the present times.
