Commercialism
in Sports

The Champions trophy tournament
in Chennai, apart from presenting us with a disappointment
for the performance of our hockey team offered
yet another strange sight as well. That was the
German team supporting the Korean Hyundai logo
on their chests. One could understand the third
world countries yielding to promoting a foreign
brand in the absence of a worthwhile industry
of their own, but for the Germans having the world
renowned Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, Volkswagens, Opels
and Porsches only to name a few, it is strange
for the national team to promote a foreign auto
industry. Or, does money matter more in these
days’ sports than national pride?
