What is the
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Going to Do?
By Dr. Ghayur Ayub

According to a
news item, General Musharraf presided over an
important “brainstorming meeting”
of PML-Q and allied parties to strategize the
future working of the party vis-à-vis the
next year elections.
At present Musharraf wears two caps: he is the
President and the Army Chief. Even a jahil (illiterate)
Pakistani knows that the Constitution of Pakistan
disallows such an arrangement. The President is
likely to become partisan in political matters
and the army chief could get entangled in politics.
As the chief interpreter of the Constitution and
custodian of securing justice in the country,
the Chief Justice of Pakistan has legal (and divine)
duty to take suo moto action against such gross
violation of the Constitution. If the law forbids
him to take action against the incumbent President
what stops him from doing the same against the
Army Chief? In the recent past he took some brave
and rightful decisions; why not in this case?
