Postcard
from Cambridge

Back home, back in the city of Allama
Mashriqi (Khaksar Movement), Allama Iqbal (poet-philosopher),
Choudhary Rahmat Ali (creator of the word 'Pakistan';
born on this day in 1897), Abdullah Yusuf Ali
(translator of the Qur'an), Professor Patras Bokhari
(literary fellow) and many other distinguished
chaps from the subcontinent. And what a lovely
city it is, indeed. I should know, I've been here
quarter of a century!
Attached is a photo taken yesterday morning. Thought
I'd share this lovely autumnal shot across the
city. It's taken from Lime Kiln Road in Cherry
Hinton (a secret viewing point). The fields in
the foreground belong to Netherhall School, then
we have the houses along Queen Edith Road. On
the horizon, left to right, we have the horrible
new development near the old Cattle Market around
Hills Road (the white tower on the left is the
new block of flats on Hills Road railway bridge).
Toward the middle we have the brown tower of the
University Library, and next to that is the Chemistry
Department (the one with sky blue chimneys) in
Lensfield Road. To the right of this are the horrid
buildings around the railway station and sticking
out just behind them is the spire of the Catholic
Church at the Hills Road/Regent Street junction.
The cranes further right mark the city center
or, more precisely, the site of the new Grand
Arcade shopping center which is taking shape from
Downing Street and along St Andrews Street all
the way to the Lion Yard.
Hope to catch up with the e-mails soon. Cheerio
for now.
