Only
Musharraf Is to Be Blamed

No one but Musharraf should
be blamed for the current crisis. He had been
very lucky and he played all his cards with superb
finesse in the past but it happens, and it happens
to the best of us: we make mistakes. He made a
huge mistake by suspending the Chief Justice of
Pakistan who was held in high esteem for his services
to the country and his countrymen. One wonders
why he committed such a folly during the election
year when it should have been obvious to him that
all parties would be gearing up to claim power.
As if that was not enough, Musharraf decided to
support the MQM for the carnage it perpetrated.
Regardless of whether MQM was not the only party
involved, all this could not have been possibly
orchestrated by the ragtag opposition had it not
been for Musharraf.
Those in favor of Musharraf, if they are close
to or past forty, should know that Pakistan’s
past, present, and future hangs in the air. Right
now the issue that we all should concentrate upon
is an independent and bold judiciary. The real
issue is how and what it would take to restore
the respect and independence of Pakistan’s
judiciary and to me that is no small or trifle
matter.
