Rushdie’s
Knighthood
By Qutubuddin Aziz
Former Minister
Embassy of Pakistan in London
The knighthood conferred on Islam’s
lampooner, Salman Rushdie who has denigrated the
Prophet of Islam in his shameful book ‘Satanic
Verses’, is an affront to the 1.4 billion
Muslims all over the world.
Salman Rushdie has made no contribution to English
literature. The pornographic pieces in his book
portray a diseased mind and it is shocking to
all Muslims that the British government has rewarded
Salman Rushdie for his book of hate against the
Muslims.
I appeal to Muslim lawyers in the UK to join hands
in instituting a case in the Superior Court in
the UK against the conferment of knighthood on
the purveyor of hate literature against the Prophet
of the Muslims. I also appeal to the Muslim members
of the British parliament to move a resolution
in the British Parliament criticizing the honor
bestowed on Salman Rushdie.
I highly appreciate the action of the Iranian
Government in expressing condemnation for the
action of the British Government in knighting
the most hated man in the Muslim World. Muslim
groups in London should call on Prince Charles
to convey to him their viewpoint and submit a
petition to the Archbishop of Canterbury to the
condemn the honor done to Salman Rushdie by the
British Government. As honors by the Queen are
conferred on the recommendation of the Prime Ministers,
Muslims should convey their views to him also.
A copy of their petition should be sent to the
heads of all states which are members of the OIC
(Organization of the Islamic Conference), the
European Courts of Justice, and to the European
Union.
