Politicization
of Issues

‘Democrats are politicizing troops issue’,
says Bush.
‘The opposition is politicizing CJP issue’,
says Musharaf.
What a commonality between the two friends. Something
else is common between them - decline in their
popularity.
The only difference is that the former knows about
his decline and the latter hasn’t grasped
it yet. To make it more intriguing general Musharaf
instructed Ch Shujaat to bring out PML-Q on the
street and show their political strength on the
very issue which he wants to keep de-politicized.
The percentage analyst
Asked in 2006 whether he had control over issues
in Pakistan, General Musharaf, who is known to
have a passion for ‘percentage-analysis’
replied “Absolutely. Is there any doubt?
200 percent. That is the way it is.”
Recently, there have been; potent rebellion by
the custodian of Lal Masjid in Islamabad; worsening
turmoil in Waziristan; brief takeover of Tank
by Taliban; fierce sectarian clashes in Parachinar;
challenge to his uniform by the expected future
partner Benazir Bhutto; the statesmanlike opposition
by Nawaz Sharif; and the unending lawyers upsurge
in favor of Chief Justice Chaudhry. To make things
worse even his close colleagues have started challenging
his authority. My jaw dropped when I read that
submissive colleagues like Faisal Saleh Hayat
objected to his handling of the CJP case in a
recently held brainstorming meeting chaired by
the general himself.
I wonder what would be his percentage analysis
on his control over the issues now, if the same
question is posed to him again.
Bravo Ch Pervaiz Elahi
The Punjab CM raised his loyalty to yet another
height by sending fake lawyers from Gujrat to
disrupt a peaceful rally organized by the real
lawyers in Islamabad. It was also reported that
some of those fake lawyers abused the journalists
to get adverse publicity in the press.
I don’t know how General Musharaf would
look at the action of his chosen cavalier but
people in general were left speechless. Let us
applaud both for the good governance they have
been dispensing for the last six years.
