Deserving a Tribute

In February 2008, the people of Pakistan were witness to one of the most successful and fair elections in the history of the country. We Pakistani-Americans felt very proud to see our country moving towards democracy. Regardless of a somewhat disconcerting situation in some parts of the country, the elections saw a good turnout of voters.
It was one of the fairest elections ever held in the history of Pakistan. Everyone around the world acknowledged the fairness of the election. President Mushrraf and his allies should be given credit for holding a fair election. Indisputably, Mushrraaf has done a great deal for the country and for sustaining democracy.
The previous government finished its five-year tenure.
It was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that any democratic government had completed its full term.
For the sake of stability and prosperity of the country Musharraf removed all charges against Asif Zaradri, Benazir Bhutto, Shebaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif.
Even though he knew they will be against him,
he allowed them to return to Pakistan and take part in the elections. What they are experiencing today is solely due to President Mushraf’s fair policies and his love for Pakistan.
They should accept this reality.
Another very good thing that General Musharraf introduced in our system is creditability. This feature had been lacking in the past. He lived up to his promise and removed his uniform to fulfill his promise. He handed over charge of his COAS post to another General. In other words he transferred his power to another general. This was not an easy decision. Now it is the duty of our politicians to support and strengthen democracy.
This is a best time to recall the good things which President Mushraf did for our country. We must pay a well-deserved tribute to President Mushraf.
