It was a most unfortunate and tragic incident to have taken place. The brother of the late Colonel Ikram appeared on the TV and, sobbing volubly, accused the Chief Secretary.
Had the Secretary stopped and taken his brother to a hospital his life could probably have been saved. Not many may give a thought as to why the Secretary did not stop. Was he that callous that he saw a man being hit and yet sped away? Was he a ‘hit & run’ type of a juvenile car user? Or was there a more pressing errand to attend to? Apparently, none whatsoever.
His callous behavior stemmed from the mindset of a typical naukri baz officer who behaves like a lion before the public and acts like a meek and humble lamb before his superiors.
Instances of such sycophancy and heartless behavior have also crept into the services. Sometime back I was dumbstruck to see a fidgety Major General, mind you a Major General, asking his PA unabashedly, and that too in my presence, “Oh, dekho marwa na dena, check up again if the Chief has really cancelled his visit to the Golf Course”. It was about 1p.m. and the General was in uniform. But in spite of the office hours he wanted to present himself at the Golf Course, and that too in uniform, at the prize distribution ceremony at which the Chief had to preside. Shame on such Generals.
