Current Political Climate and Accountability

How short is the memory of the Pakistani nation! A few years ago, we were in a similar political situation. The ruling party’s head was under investigation for corruption and as a result the sitting prime minister was disqualified.
Flashback to a couple of decades ago, governments were overthrown because of similar corruption allegations.
However, each time a government was overthrown everyone forgot about the real issue of bringing the looted wealth back to the country. Where are the “Swiss accounts” or “Surrey Palace (Mahal)” now? Does anyone even think about them today? Unfortunately, accountability in Pakistan is only used as a political leverage.
For real accountability to take place we need to rise above political differences and extend accountability to all institutions including military and judiciary. Accountability, if not done for the right reasons, is no more than a political gimmick. Let’s seize the moment and not lose sight of the real goal of accountability, i.e., bring the looted wealth back.
